Having grown up in Methuen, Massachusetts, I was so surprised to watch the Queen’s Gambit on Netflix a day ago and see the main character go to a home called the Methuen Home: Orphanage for Girls after her mother passed away. My instant thought was: I can’t believe it! That’s St. Ann’s Home! Growing up in Methuen, there was a home for orphaned girl called St. Ann’s Home. It’s been around since 1925 and still exists, though its purpose has evolved over the years (and there are no longer “orphanages” in the US). My Mom used to bring me there all the time to donate clothes and toys. FYI, to my knowledge, there are no other cites called Methuen. And for one to have had an orphanage for girls is way too coincidental! Further, Methuen is known for its many historic castles (I once sang on a recorded song called “I Like Methuen” that included references to them!). As fans of the series know, the Methuen Home is set in an old castle! As a Methuen native, I must admit I found this so cool. Of course, it might be nicer for your hometown to be noteworthy for better things than a not-very-nice home for parentless girls. But you take what you can get! Thanks for watching!
